This image was taken at the head of Sequim Bay at low tide, looking north toward the mouth of the bay. The remains of old foundation piling guard the foreground.

space needle at fifty
Here is that quintessential Seattle icon, mirrored by the EMP Museum. Crowds wait to ascend to the observation deck on the anniversary of the opening of the 1962 World's Fair.

emp flare (2)
Here is another unusual image made from details of the EMP Museum at the Seattle Center. In this case, the details were above the museum's group entrance, and I turned the photo on its side.

emp shadows
The alizarin-tinted wall of the EMP Museum was responsible for a lot of the mischief in my previously posted photos- casting colored reflected sunlight everywhere. Here it decorates the shadows of two Seattle Center visitors.

emp sunset
Here is another abstract / fantasy landscape pulled from the outside walls of the EMP Museum at the Seattle Center. Although the Center is now celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, this museum is a much more recent addition: it opened in 2000.
It's an interesting building which can yield such an image. Here is the original photo, slightly cropped. I turned it on its side and cropped it more tightly for the above abstract.

spring fruit trees
Today was another plein air painting Monday for our local Port Townsend-based group. This time it was at the Bulis Forest Preserve, a 135-acre land trust property near Old Fort Townsend State Park. Here is my effort for the morning.

original space needle
Here is another of my Dad's 35mm color slides of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. The top of the Space Needle was orange when it was new. The SkyLine banquet facility at the 100-foot level did not yet exist (it was added 20 years later) and the entrance lobby at the base was smaller than it is now.
The US Science Pavilion arches are in the foreground of this photo.
We visited the Seattle Center yesterday on the 50th anniversary of the fair opening, and we noticed they are painting the top of the needle orange again! We met some of the Seattle urban sketchers, too.

at the fair
The Seattle World's Fair opened on this day, fifty years ago, at what is now the Seattle Center. Century 21 Exposition ran for six months, closing on October 21, 1962. The fair had close to 10 million visitors.
I found my Dad's color slides from our visit to the fair in the summer of '62. Here is one of fairgoers, in their early sixties fashions, with the Science Pavilion in the background.

Here is another science fiction landscape courtesy of the architectural details of the Emp Museum in Seattle, Washington.
For this image, I rotated my original photograph onto its right side.

emp escape route
A monorail runs through it. The EMP Museum, that is. More architectural details from the colorful building at the Seattle Center.
Since this photo is essentially an abstract, it can also be viewed upside-down. You decide.

emp carnival
It looks like Carnival, right here at the Seattle Center, as reflected in the shiny wall of the EMP Museum.

emp abstract #2
Another photograph of architectural details at the EMP Museum. This Frank Gehry-designed building at the Seattle Center provides a lot of material for this type of photography.

emp abstract
Here is another photo featuring architectural details from the EMP Museum at the Seattle Center. This image, like yesterday's, is from the science fiction wing of the museum. It certainly looks like it could be from the cover of a sci-fi novel.

gull and cormorants
We walked on the beach at the end of Miller Peninsula to Travis Spit this afternoon. It was a beautiful day to look out over the Strait of Juan de Fuca. This view is toward Protection Island, which is near Diamond Point.

A second meditation on the Fort Worden batteries, this image is a digital distortion of the photo "Rings" from my original post.

battery mandala
This image is a simple digital distortion of my "Column" photograph from my post last November on the batteries at Fort Worden. In keeping with the Easter Egg theme (I know it's not a true circle), it is a sort of meditation on the aging defense structures.

cape george meadows
We are finally getting some great plein air painting weather. The local group met at a spot near the golf course at Cape George, a short drive from Port Townsend.

They are out there, some more hidden than others. This lad in Zagreb, Croatia, has found one and it's bigger than he is!
Happy Easter!

We live in an area blessed with Boat Havens. In addition to the one in Port Townsend, there is a Boat Haven in Port Angeles, WA. I found this working boat duo in the latter.

hull cleaning
There is usually something interesting to see at the Boat Haven in Port Townsend. In this case it's pressure washing barnacles off the hull of a fishing boat. I like this photo because it shows an unusual subject in an unusual way.

railroad bridge detail
A detail of the old wooden-timbered bridge over the lower Dungeness River, at Railroad Bridge Park just west of downtown Sequim. In this photo, I was standing on the bridge looking up. The bridge is now part of the Olympic Discovery Trail.
