another view of the mountain

In the fall of 1984, I was on the east side of Mount St. Helens again and got this late afternoon telephoto view of the mountain's new top.

I also got peekaboo views of a swollen and log-jammed Spirit Lake, looking much less like the alpine resort destination it used to be.

It's rather like a moonscape grouping of shots... except for the dead log debris. Mysterious and lifeless, but dramatic. J and I were watching Robinson Crusoe on Mars last night, and this looks like the landscape in the movie (which was actually Death Valley).

Robinson Crusoe on Mars was one of my favorite films from my youth! I rented it again recently from Netflix when Criterion finally released it to dvd. For a long time, it was unavailable except for the rare laserdisc copy, so it was fun to be able to see it again.
