ballard locks h.q.
This is the headquarters building of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Seattle. The locks allow vessel traffic to move between the Lake Washington Ship Canal and Puget Sound while maintaining the higher lake level and preventing salt water intrusion.

landscape abstract #5
This image ended up looking more like art from fabric or dryer lint than what it really was: bare tree trunks and branches against a sunset sky.

country road
This photo uses the kind of long exposure and camera motion I have used to create interior abstract images. While not so abstract, it does have a pleasing softness and sense of motion that is different from the results I get with pinhole photographs.

at the window
It looks like it was windy but it's just the result of camera movement, in this interior abstract photograph.

passage
This abstract photo has as its subject the same dozen roses which first appeared in Interior Abstract #5.

interior abstract #11
Here is another in the series. A throw pillow covered in a tropical print provided some of the interesting colors.

the blue beret
Today it's back to interior abstracts. This is number six of a series. These digital photos use camera movement and/or lens zooming over a longish (2 second) exposure to create blurred abstract images from ordinary interior scenes. Unlike Saturday's dozen roses, which were really there, there is no actual beret in this photo.

battery doorway
Here is a new battery photograph from a recent visit back to Fort Worden, near Port Townsend, WA. This storage room doorway is part of Battery Kinzie, on the beach near Point Wilson.

a dozen roses
This is number five in my series of digital interior abstract photographs. This one is clearly a little less abstract than most of the others.

interior abstract #4
This ghostly image, like the rest of this series so far, is the result of a long exposure (2 seconds) at a low ISO (100) and a small aperture (around f/11 or f/16), in a low-light interior setting.

in a nutshell
Here is the third in my series of abstract interior scenes.
So far, when I take these pictures, I have very little idea how they're going to turn out. So I take many and use maybe a few. That and the instant feedback make it nice to have digital film.

interior abstract #2
Here is another photograph from my developing series of deliberately blurred interior scenes. These are an experiment in several ways- in abstract composition, in learning how to get what I want out of camera movement, in learning what elements will make an interesting image.

sunrise on haleakala
Today the sun rises on a new year.
One of the popular activities on Maui is to watch the sunrise from the rim of the volcano Haleakala. Tip: if you do go up there for sunrise, dress warmly. It will be chilly!
With these scanned slides, I leave Hawaii behind and return this blog to the Pacific Northwest, at least for now. Happy New Year!
